Goofy or Regular?

Goofy or Regular

I’m not referring to cartoon characters here, but the stance you take on the board, or more specifically which foot you place at the front of the board.

If you wakeboard with your left foot at the front of the board then you are considered to be ‘regular’, if you favour the right foot at the front of the board, then you’re ‘goofy’.

Am I goofy or regular? How to test

There are a few different tests to see which foot you would naturally lead with, but in my opinion, this is the best way to test which stance is your most natural:

Step 1

Read this step and then stop reading, you will need to ask someone to help you. OK, stand tall with both your feet close together, and ask your companion to give you a gentle shove from behind. Go do this now then once you have done it carry on reading (or get your friend to read the following step first).

--- STOP READING NOW ---

Step 2

As your friend pushed you from behind you were forced to take a step forward, whichever foot you moved first would be your leading foot and you would therefore place this foot at the back of the wakeboard.

Another way to find out, although certainly a harder test, is to get out on the water and try both. One will feel a whole lot more comfortable than the other and this will give you the answer you are seeking, but you will probably take a few tumbles along the way.

Just like most people are right handed, the majority of wakeboarders are regular footed. That's why it's called regular. It’s important to remember though that there are always exceptions to the rule so if the test tells you that you are regular, but you feel more comfortable riding goofy, then ride goofy!
